The Harris County Commissioners Court established the Harris County Safe School Commission (HCSSC) in June 2022 at the recommendation of Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey. This decision followed the tragic Uvalde school shooting, which claimed the lives of 19 students and 2 teachers. Initially formed as an ad-hoc body, the HCSSC was tasked with providing recommendations on how Harris County could support enhanced safety measures for its 25 Independent School Districts and private schools during the 2022-2023 school year.
In August 2024, Commissioners Court approved a proposal by Commissioner Lesley Briones to strengthen and expand the HCSSC by establishing it as a standing Harris County commission. Commissioner Briones reconvened the Safe School Commission that same year to advance strategies such as, adopting national best practices, fostering enhanced collaboration, training, and communication among Harris County’s 25 school districts and over 75 law enforcement agencies.
